Chinese, Tibetan, Indian and Mughal influences can all be seen in Nepali painting styles in all over the centuries. The earliest Newari paintings were illuminated manuscripts bound in ornate covers dating from the 11th century. Of interest is the absence of perspective in many paintings and the fact that color was used less for definition or shading than for religious symbolism. Unfortunately, much art has left the country or is hung in temples where it is rarely seen, but Bhaktapur’s art gallery has a fine collection.
Modern Nepali artists struggle to make a living, although there are many small galleries around the Kathmandu valley featuring local work. Some artists are fortunate enough to get a sponsored overseas
exhibition or a posting at an art college outside this country to teach their skills. Commissioning a painting by a local artist is a way to support the arts and take home a unique souvenir of your trip.
